An article from MSN by Devin Coldeway

Recently, Google has added extra features such as a full calculator and drop down boxes for unit conversions.  Previously, only quick calculations could be made.  Now, you can quickly know how many gallons are in 50 liters or vice versa.

Simply type in: “50 liters in gallons,” instantly you will see the answer of 13.2086.

All of these additions are part of an on-going project of Google called Knowledge Graph.  Its features include a scientific calculator, algebraic expressions and a unit conversion tool.  Some calculations are not yet supported such as converting cubits into fathoms.  But, Google does not publicly announce every small improvement they make, so don’t be surprised if new calculations are added to knowledge graph.

What is IPv6?

An article from CNET by Seth Rosenblatt

IPv6 stands for Internet Protocol version 6.  It’s beginning to replace IPv4, which is the current system being used.  This means faster and more secure networks for everyone, and it’s about time.

For the past couple of years internet service providers have had to suffice with IP address sharing.  This means that right now one of your devices that connect to the internet could be shared with someone else.  This isn’t that much of an issue at the moment but over time it would turn into a serious security threat.

IPv6 will allow enough IP addresses for devices in the quintillions.  IPv4 only supports 4.3 billion, which isn’t enough to support the growing demand for online services right now.

With all this in mind here are few things you should consider checking to fully benefit from this change.  If you own your own router make sure it’s compatible with IPv6.  If your router was provided by your internet service provider you might want to give them a call and ask a few questions about it.  It hasn’t been fully implemented yet and will eventually take years to do so.  Find out what devices and equipment your internet service provider has tested for compatibility.

Web Browser Could be Cause of Slow Computers

An article from TechNewsDaily by Joseph Fieber

It’s frustrating when your computer slows down, often times this is because of your web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome.  You can return your computer to peek performance by determining what resources your computer is using.

Here is one way to find the problem:
-  Access task manager by holding CTRL and SHIFT and then ESC.
-  Click the “Processes” tab

Under the header “Image Name,” you will see programs you are currently using.  Under the header “CPU” you will find the percentage of the total CPU or memory that that program is using.  Any one program with 50% or greater or a few with 20% will affect your computers performance.

Tip: Click the header titled “Memory” to put the highest CPUs at the top.

Technology Brings Eyesight to the Blind

An article from MSN by InnovationNewsDaily Staff

Neuroscientists at the University of Hebrew in Israel have invented a headset that tells visually impaired people what is in front of them.  Although the headset, called EyeMusic, is still in the prototype stage, eventually it could help people with everyday tasks.

The device looks like a headset with attached headphones and a webcam located on the bridge of the nose.   The camera scans the objects and play sounds to represent the height, color and brightness.

“The notes span five octaves and were carefully chosen by musicians to create a pleasant experience for the users,” said Amir Amedi, who is leading the research.

Amedi tested EyeMusic by training 18 sighted people to use the device.  He found that they could identify colored squares just as quickly blindfolded with the device as they could without the blindfold.

Tweets Disappear from LinkedIn

An article from Technoblog by Devin Coldewey

Social media sites have always allowed you to pass updates from one site to another.  Your tweet can show up on your Facebook stream and so forth.  However, LinkedIn announced on Friday that your tweets on Twitter will no longer appear on your LinkedIn stream.  This is because of “Twitters evolving platform efforts.”

Twitter is adding new features and apps, and some of these would not transfer to the other sites correctly.  Users can still post to both Twitter and LinkedIn though.  It just has to originate from LinkedIn and be sent to Twitter, not the other way around.
